Press release from Michigan City Police:

On Tuesday, Oct. 24, at approximately 11:50 a.m., the Michigan City Police Department was dispatched to the area of the 1800 block of Elston Street in an attempt to locate a 16-year-old male runaway from the Juvenile Services Center in LaPorte, who escaped the night prior.

Upon arrival, it was learned that a residence was burglarized and that the suspect(s) stole several handguns, long guns and ammunition. Precautionary steps were taken by contacting the Michigan City Area Schools administrative staff while also deploying officers and detectives to schools previously attended by the juvenile.

During this time, members of the Michigan City Police Department, Trail Creek Police Department and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office continued to search the city for the juvenile.

At approximately 2:45 p.m. a suspect was located in the 2000 Block of Buffalo Street, Michigan City, and was taken into custody By Detective Corporal Jeff Piotrowski and Detective Nick Krause, who are members of the Fugitive Apprehension Streets Team (FAST). As a result of the arrest, all weapons and ammunition were recovered.

The quick apprehension and recovery of the stolen weapons is a credit to the exceptional response and efforts by members of the Uniform Patrol Division, Investigative Division, FAST Team, and the LaPorte County HIDTA Drug Task Force.
