A resident shot and killed an intruder in his home in the 6700 East block of County Road 1000 North on July 8, 2013, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. The resident will not be charged, the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s office has announced.
The victim has been identified as Jason Rabe, 23, of Three Oaks, MI.
Police said that at about 9 a.m., Rabe broke a rear window in the home and entered. The resident awoke when he heard the glass break. He armed himself with a pistol and encountered Rabe, who he said was armed with a hatchet. After a physical confrontation, the resident shot Rabe in the chest. The resident then called 911. Rabe was dead when police arrived.
The resident, who has not been ID’d by police, said he did not know the intruder.
Police said Rabe apparently arrived at the residence on a moped.
