La Porte County is under a Flash Flood Watch through at least Friday night

If it looks like a lake, hit the brake.

Many of us have experienced such a moment of truth when, behind the wheel, we encounter water on the road ahead. How deep? No way to tell. Rather than risking the chance of hydroplaning or floating, don’t go there. Turn around.

Local police, transportation and government agencies are issuing such warnings as La Porte County and other locales find themselves under a flash flood watch through at least Friday evening.

Here’s the forecast from the Northern Indiana Office of the National Weather Service as of late Thursday night, June 24:

Friday

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 79. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday Night

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 69. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half inch possible.

Saturday

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 84. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night

Showers and thunderstorms likely before 1am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
