The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office announced today that it is continuing its investigation into a one-vehicle crash in rural Springfield Township that killed 33-year-old Michigan City, Ind. resident Robert L. Comer Friday morning.
Police said that at about 7:44 a.m. deputies were summoned to CR-675 North, west of State Rd. 39, where Deputy Austin Epple confirmed that the driver was deceased.
Police determined that the silver 2004 Volkswagen had been traveling west on CR-675 North when, for an unknown reason, it drove left of center and began to travel off the south side of the roadway. The vehicle continued to partially travel off the roadway for about 75 feet before colliding with a concrete culvert. After striking the culvert, the vehicle rolled over into a water filled drainage ditch and came to rest on its roof.
Comer was trapped inside the vehicle, which was partially submerged, police said.
Toxicology test results are pending on Comer, the lone occupant, police said.
Assisting in the matter were Captain Dallas Smythe, Sergeant L. Scott Boswell, La Porte County Coroner’s Office, La Porte County EMS, La Porte County Haz-Mat and the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department.
