Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry

Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry said in a prepared release that he supports his city’s officers but is unhappy that his administration will have to spend time and effort to help the city’s insurance defense carrier as it responds to a lawsuit filed against Parry’s predecessor.

On Friday, June 5, 2020 a civil lawsuit was filed in LaPorte Superior Court 1 by Michigan City Police Officers Tim Richardson, Francisco Rodriguez, Willie Henderson, and Kyle Shiparski against the City of Michigan City and former Mayor Ron Meer.

The suit alleges that Meer, while in his former official capacity as mayor, took certain actions against these police officers after the arrest of Meer’s stepson, Adam Bray.

In addition, the city has received a Notice of Tort Claim from the LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorney, John and Mary Lake, Adam Bray, and Ron Meer related to these matters from last year. All of these matters have been turned over to the city’s insurance carrier for defense.

“I support our police officers, who were engaged in their official law enforcement duties during this unfortunate turn of events,” Parry said. “I am not happy that my administration will have to spend the time and effort assisting our insurance defense carrier in these matters especially when the City has many more pressing issues.”
